Policy Straw Poll: Consumer Debt/National Savings Rate

August 30th, 2007 by admin

OK, you know the drill. Appx. 200 words. Starts with “I am the only candidate who”. Contains a substantive policy point.

We’re nearing the end of our series — just a couple more weeks, and we’ll retire the straw poll…at least for a bit. Give everyone a break.

But until then, the beat goes on. This week the subject was Consumer Debt/National Saving Rate. Candidates were free to differentiate themselves on any area of that issue.

15 Ways to Promote eLearning Programs

August 30th, 2007 by admin

Pre-note: In this article, teleclass is an example used toillustrate one type of eLearning market. The tips work thesame for other eLearning programs, including, but notlimited to, teleseminars and ecourses.

In the mid-1990s, the teleclass format began and was named, distance learning. During these early years, learninginstitutions, particularly universities, were chief users ofthis format. Mainly due to the large equipment investmentneeded at that time. Now, due to technology changes andcost reduction, people can give and attend ePrograms withoutleaving their chair or selling their first child. Noparking challenges, auto expenses, or travel time required.Another benefit to learning by phone is that your listeningskills will reach new heights quickly.

In 2003, technology allowed a single conference line toexpand from 30 to 150 participants per line. Affordableconference lines were previously only available in certainstates, Florida and Nevada. Now other states, like NewYork, are jumping in on this bandwagon with affordablerates.

Currently, a 24/7 conference line, is available to rentaround $600 a year. An alternative is to rent the line bythe hour. This can range between $10 to $20 per hourdepending on the service features desired. You can alsoshare a line with one or two others to reduce your cost. Voicemail marketing

August 30th, 2007 by admin

When doing some research on effective marketing techniques, I ran across a website called Vontoo voice messaging that sends out voice messages to people who have opt-in to hear these sorts of marketing messages.

The opt-in feature is one of the biggest benefits because the people who have sign up have said “Yes, I want to hear what you’re telling me!” As you tailor your marketing message, it’s always easier to deliver it to people who are willing to listen. The more that you can reduce the costs on delivering messages to people who don’t care to hear them, the better your bottom line will be. For the most part, these people who have opt-in are probably current clients of yours who have told you that they will accept your mail pieces, newsletters, and other marketing material.

This seems unique in the fact that your marketing message is being delivered in the same format as text message marketing, yet it’s told by voice.

DAVID CAMERON ON CRIME AND VIDEO GAMES

August 29th, 2007 by admin

So David Cameron, the Conservative party leader, has reverted to Eighties thinking, blaming the rise of violence in the UK on video games, music and films. The Conservatives have just released a paper called ‘It’s Time To Fight Back’ which argues that depictions of ‘extreme, casual and callous violence’ have a ‘coarsening effect on the ethical sensibility of young people’. But his argument has already been dismissed by experts in the field, including one Prof Jeffrey Goldstein who responded saying that there was no link between mock violence in video games and real-life crime.

What do you guys think? Do you think that there is any link between in-game and real-life violence? Do you think the violence in computer games numbs you to reality? Or do you think this is a tired old argument and yet again they are looking for the answers in the wrong place? Let us know…

Return on S&P500 = 90 day treasuries since 1999

August 29th, 2007 by admin

I spotted this chart on another forum…is anyone else concerned when stock returns appear to be doing well year-to-year, yet over the medium term they’ve been mostly flat versus a "risk-free" bond. Then when you take out inflation (+3%/year), taxes (~2%/year), and the decline in the value of the dollar (depends on which foreign currency you benchmark but it’s substantial, as anyone who’s been to Europe lately knows) and you’ve actually lost purchasing power over the last 8 years.

Obviously, this chart was put together by a perma-bear, he selected a particular time scale to make his point…but even so, I think it’s easy to be fooled by reporting a 10% "average annual return" on your investments but in reality your true return is much less. The author also ignores the benefits from a more diversified portfolio over this time period - but when I look at returns YTD 2007, there seems to be a lot of correlation between large cap, small cap, and international stocks, particularly on the market’s bad days, so I’m not sure diversification is enough to save us all.

Of course, I don’t know what other investment options there are that

would have a better chance of generating real returns…

Farmers still need additional rainfall - NAB

August 29th, 2007 by admin

FARMERS need more rain in the next few weeks to avoid crop losses and increase pasture growth, according to a new agricultural forecast.

National Australia Bank’s latest Farm Outlook says that while late autumn falls were consolidated by rainfall in early winter, lack of follow-up rains are making farm producers increasingly anxious about the production outlook.

“With cropping areas receiving one of their best starts for many years in NSW, Victoria and South Australia, a large area has been planted,” NAB says.

Building raving fans involves trust

August 29th, 2007 by admin

Business Coach column by Bill Gilliland

Salespeople and business owners are always looking for the next prospect or next big deal.

Lead generation by definition is any strategy that is used to put prospects into your company’s sales pipeline. Typical lead-generation strategies include direct mail, telemarketing, newspaper and magazine advertising, cold calling, yellow pages, et cetera. The common denominator is that all lead-generation strategies have a cost element.

Asset Protection Systems

August 29th, 2007 by admin

By Peter Emerson Asset protection systems refer to the various strategies available for protecting your valuables from lawsuits and creditor-collection attempts. This sort of protection is usually adopted by most businesses and individuals. Some simple steps can help protect most of your assets without incurring much expense or trouble. In fairly safe areas in which crime is not a major problem, a basic system designed for asset protection may be enough. Everyone will certainly want to protect his home, since a house is considered to be one’s biggest and most expensive asset. There are three ways one can do this, which include physical protection, corporate protection, and insurance protection. A physical protection system refers to what you can change in the property structure to protect it. The first point to remember is that you never buy a home in areas of high crime or natural disasters such as earthquakes or landslides. Then, consider installing security systems, burglar alarms, and fences. Home security systems are designed to help prevent theft or damage of your valuables while you are away from home. Corporate protection is offered through limited liability companies, corporations, and trusts. Having your property in this entity provides legal security and possible tax breaks. The benefits of this protection vary according to your location, so it is important to look into the type of corporate protection while you are thinking about purchasing properties. A third protection system, which is simple to do, is the utilization of the inherent asset protection of an insurance policy. Many insurance companies and banks provide you good rates for insurance on an investment property. An insurer is always ready to pay a specified amount of money to or for you if a specific incident occurs. The incident might be your falling sick, someone damaging your assets, or a natural disaster. Asset Protection provides detailed information on Asset Protection, Asset Protection Trusts, Offshore Asset Protection, Asset Protection Strategies and more. Asset Protection is affiliated with Asset Management System. Financial services firms lag behind on ‘after sales’ service

August 29th, 2007 by admin

If you’re a small guy in the investment arena, you can’t expect the lead manager of your mutual fund to pick up the phone and ring you up when stocks started tumbling. But at least you should have received a text message or email from the sales guy who made you sign on the dotted line, right?

From reader feedbacks INQUURER.net has been getting, it seems like most brokers, investment managers, bankers and sales agents have forgotten their clients in the midst of the market uncertainty. If you’re one of the few who received at least a group text message or email explaining what is happening, consider yourself lucky (and smart) for choosing the right company. Otherwise, you’re just like the rest of the small guys who are left holding the bag.

From a macro perspective, this can be alarming. Many mutual fund investors, for example, are first-timers attracted by the fantastic returns the industry reported last year. Worse, if they were enticed to invest to chase those returns, they are probably the ones now making a beeline towards the exit.

In his column today, Noet Ravalo calls this a sad commentary about our financial market. “Investor-level education and awareness remains wanting in many respects. Many savers who have crossed their bridge and became ‘investors’ feel left out after making the investment,” he says.

WARHAWK STATEMENT

August 29th, 2007 by admin

Following is a statement from Sony regarding the DRM on Warhawk…

Statement

In order to protect our investment in this ground-breaking game and maintain our ability to offer a 24-hour free online gameplay experience, SCE will be utilizing an alternative Digital Rights Management (DRM) policy for the downloadable version of Warhawk. The downloadable version of Warhawk, which will be available from the PLAYSTATION Store on Thursday 30th August, will be directly tied to the registered PLAYSTATION Network (PSN) account that purchased the game. Only that registered PSN account will be authenticated for gameplay. You will still be able to download the game to up to five PS3 systems. However, if a user downloads Warhawk onto a different machine, he / she will only be able to play via the original PSN user account on that machine and could not play on a different machine for 24 hours. This does not affect the Blu-ray Disc version of the game which will be available at retail later in September.
